The LIRR Expansion project in Nassau County, from Floral Park to Hicksville, is an integral part of the Long Island Rail System. The Third Rail project improves railroad services by increasing flexibility, reliability and capacity on five LIRR branches that carry about 40% of the rail line’s 300,000 weekday passengers. Walker Consultants is the Prime Designer and Engineer of Record for three garages associated with the expansion, including the Mineola North garage, which utilizes the design-build delivery system.

The Mineola North parking structure at Harrison Avenue and First Street replaces an L-shaped surface lot. The 500-space, 6-level structure features a 2-bay circulation pattern, 2-way traffic system, and single-threaded ramping system. It also contains one glass-backed elevator/stair tower to increase passive security.

The exterior facades consist of aesthetically pleasing precast concrete panels with embedded thin brick to blend with the aesthetic of buildings surrounding the site. This detail had been critical for stakeholder buy-in and had ensured locals that the structure would feel like a part of their community. The garage is also walking distance from residential neighborhoods and reduces the need for street parking.

Walker’s services included structural engineering, functional design, and architectural design throughout all design phases. We also designed the placement of CCTV security camera locations and a single-arm gated system with pay-on-foot machines within the garage.
