Book Tower Restoration

LOCATION

Detroit, Michigan

Walker Consultants has worked closely with Bedrock throughout its purchase and renovation of the historic Book Building and Tower. This Detroit landmark dates to 1917 (13-story building) and 1926 (38-story tower) and is an iconic part of the city’s skyline. The building has limestone and brick cladding with ornamental terra cotta and a peaked copper roof, all of which were deteriorated.

A Walker expert examines the condition of the Book Tower's cladding from a suspended scaffold

Walker performed a pre-purchase due diligence appraisal for Bedrock, and then performed additional condition appraisal and investigation from suspended scaffolding after the purchase. Walker designed repairs that Bedrock could put out for bidding, and has monitored and provided assistance throughout the construction process.

With the repairs Walker designed and oversaw, the Book Building and Tower can remain an icon in Detroit for the next century.
