Stamford Transportation Center: A New Era of Transit
The Stamford Transportation Center serves as a key transit hub in the Northeast Corridor. Located in downtown Stamford, it caters to nearly 30,000 customers each week day.
To accommodate growing needs before tearing down an old garage, the Connecticut Department of Transportation undertook a design-build competition to construct a new parking facility. This garage offers 928 parking spaces and enhances commuter experiences.
Design and Innovation
The 928-space garage’s design accommodates the busy location by allowing State Street to pass through it, ensuring smooth pedestrian and vehicular flow. A 320-foot pedestrian bridge provides easy access to station platforms, boosting both flow and accessibility.
Sustainable features aimed for Parksmart Bronze certification. These include electric bike charging, bicycle parking, photovoltaic panels, and LED lighting.
Aesthetic and User-Centric Features
The garage’s facade uses custom metal panels to prevent a monolithic look. Programmable LED lighting allows for customizable displays, enhancing both aesthetics and community engagement.
The pedestrian bridge acts as a city gateway. It features “Welcome to Stamford” in prominent letters, visible from various points, serving as both infrastructure and art.
Amenities and Safety
The facility supports modern urban needs with extensive bike provisions and a rideshare drop-off area. It also includes an automated parking system, enhanced security, and customer service features.
Award-Winning Excellence
The Stamford Transportation Center has earned Connecticut Department of Transportation’s Arthur W. Gruhn Excellence in Construction Award for Innovative Construction Methods. This award highlights our commitment to innovative and functional design.
This facility meets Stamford’s commuter needs and sets a standard for future urban transit developments. It combines functionality, aesthetic appeal, and sustainability in a landmark project.
