Optimizing Transit Networks
The Fairfax Monument Drive Parking Garage and Transit Center is a 261,660 SF, eight (8)-level, 820-stall pre-cast parking garage. Constructed of pre-cast concrete and clad with an aluminum tube cladding system, the facade maintains “openness” without compromising the desired aesthetic of the structure. At night, the earth-tone terracotta facade and glass canopy are illuminated by architectural lighting. The garage provides enhanced commuting options for Fair Oaks Mall, Fairfax Coner, and County Government Complex employees and residents.
Solutions for Urban Congestion
This project is part of the VDOT’s “Transform I-66 Outside the Beltway.” The use of multimodal transportation options manages I-66 corridor traffic congestion. The transit center provides bus access and access for carpooling commuters to the newly constructed express lanes. Walker provided structural engineering and functional design of the parking lot. Walker also implemented slug lanes, providing a separate pickup/drop-off area and entrance from the Parkway with traffic and mobility concerns in mind.
Sustainability Transforms the Ride
Forty (40) EV Chargers, 85% recycled construction waste, and Capital Bikeshare rental qualify this as a Low-Impact Development (LID) project. LED lighting and occupancy sensors have been utilized to reduce electrical consumption. The green roof at the perimeter has been designed to accommodate the future installation of PV panels. Landscape features include Tree Save along the Government Center Parkway, which uses a low retaining wall system, a rain garden, and native and non-invasive species.
Accessible Multimodal Transit
The eight (8)-bay bus loop with a central pedestrian canopy serves regional, local, and commuter buses. It comprises segmented steel and glass sections for weather protection and shade. On the garage’s ground level, 16 stalls are assigned priority parking for slugging. The experience of commuters, workers, and residents is the main priority of this project.
Navigating Safety Enhancements
The facility supports the safety of the community by providing a Pedestrian Safe Zone with high-visibility crosswalks and bollards. Other safety features include pedestrian canopies, pickup/drop-off areas, and ride-share lanes.
