Redefining the Airport Experience

Fresno-Yosemite International Airport (FAT) serves as a primary commercial airport for the San Joaquin Valley and three national parks: Yosemite, Sequoia and Kings Canyon. Walker designed a four-level, 920-stall, above-ground parking structure and incorporated an Automated Parking Guidance System to further improve functionality and accommodate a higher volume of travelers.

Future Adaptability

Walker focused on improving parking capacity and providing a seamless experience for the visitors of this rapidly growing airport. During the early stages of the project, our analyses confirmed the need for increased parking capacity, in-line with projected growth. At strategic locations, the structure was designed with downturned structural moment frames, providing horizontal expansion possibilities of the garage in the future. Structural accommodations for future photovoltaic (PV) systems were incorporated into the base design, allowing a PV system to be installed post-completion of the garage.

Next-level Modernization

Technology at the new parking structure features a modern camera-based single-space APGS, which provides a reliable and accurate count of spaces-available on all levels. Overhead centerline LED space indicators and advanced full-color signage clearly display space occupancy messaging. While the APGS supports advanced features tailored to the Airport’s needs, it also features an easy-to-use administrative interface with complete historical data reporting and control of system operation. Additionally, a car locator feature using License Plate Recognition (LPR) is integrated with the PARCS pay stations, helping customers to locate their vehicles.

New Heights for Design

Our comprehensive technology and operations services supported the Airport throughout the APGS development, from conceptual design to procurement and vendor evaluation. With increased parking capacity and improved access, the Airport now offers a smoother parking experience for visitors and travelers.
