Walker’s own Chrissy Mancini Nichols and Sue Thompson presented a webinar “Five Curb Management and Off Street Parking Strategies” as part of the annual California Public Parking Association‘s virtual conference, “California on the Move”, on November 17.

The webinar was attended by 50+ CPPA members and was well received.  In the webinar, Mancini Nichols and Thompson shared the latest strategies around the high value of the curb, and best practices for implementation.

Thanks to CPPA for including Walker and we are hopeful we can all meet in person in 2021. Mancini Nichols leads up Walker’s curb management strategy and Thompson is an operations, technology and TDM consultant. Becky Eldridge served as facilitator of the webinar.

An article authored by Walker’s Dr. Can Simsir’s was recently published as part of the virtual proceedings of the 17^th World Conference on Earthquake Engineering.  The conference covers a wide variety of subjects on earthquake engineering.  Simsir authored the paper, with Walker colleagues Dr. Behnam Arya and Dr. Anurag Jain as co-authors.  Entitled “Performance of Low-Rise Buildings With No Seismic Design In Unanticipated Earthquakes”, the paper presents the seismic performance of low-rise buildings during the Cushing Earthquake in November 2016.  This paper summarizes the lessons learned and identifies the types of damage the buildings sustained, the seismic factors and structural vulnerabilities that contributed to the damage, structural analysis to evaluate the damage, and methodologies for repair and strengthening considering the increased current hazard for the region due to induced earthquakes.

Jonathan Wicks presented “University Campus Parking Master Planning: Getting to Yes” at PMX Live 2020.  Wicks co-presented with Casey Jones (of Desman Parking) and conducted a role play for “Parking University”, featuring a lively cast of characters at a fictional (but very realistic) university.  Wicks and Jones play the role of parking consultants, with two Walker colleagues playing the roles of concerned faculty (Kevin White) and Chief of Campus Police (David Lieb).  Also participating were colleagues from Chip Chism of University of West Florida, Michael Kasitz of Austin Peay State University and Michael Sokoff at Missouri.

When implementing paid parking, the public process often makes or breaks the best laid implementation plan.  In this interactive session, attendees will get to role-play a Town Meeting where the Town Council presents a plan to implement paid on-street parking.  Learning Objectives:  identify the benefits of implementing paid parking; predict potential reactions various stakeholders will have when presented with a paid parking plan; and prepare effective responses in advance of the public meeting.
