Ala Moana Center Mall

LOCATION

Honolulu, Hawaii

Ala Moana Center Mall has a multiple level parking structure serving the biggest mall in Honolulu, HI. Its cast-in-place concrete slabs were in poor condition due to corrosion of the top layer of reinforcing steel.

Walker identified a more cost-effective restoration scheme in complete replacement of top surface concrete by a new overlay instead of isolated, small concrete patched.  The structure had failing and damaged expansion joints, water was ponding and leaking, sealants were missing and there was considerable spalling and cracked slabs.

Walker proposed a 10-year restoration program and we prepared repair design and corresponding construction documents. Hydrodemolition was used to remove the top 1.5″ of concrete from the slab and a new concrete topping with new reinforcements was placed.
